The second week of the NFL weekend, yielded huge profits for online sportsbooks and bookies. This was a text book week for BSPs where nearly all the public teams went down handedly in the early games.

For those who don’t know what a BSP is, it is an acronym for Bar Stool Pundit. The theory is to walk in any sports bar and ask the regulars there who they like in each game. When there is a consensus, everyone thinks the same side will cover, bet the exact opposite.

For several seasons now a forum poster going by Natedogg, has been kind enough to share his plays which involve fading the top BSP picks. This week he released the following plays based on the public being heavily on the opposite side.

Buccaneers +3.5
Titans +7
Browns +7

Not only did bettors riding Natdoggs week 2 BSP bets do extremely well, so did the sportsbooks.

Gambling911 released an article after the games where complete which alluded to the same fact. Here is a quote from their article:

The NFL Week 2 results are in and the bookies made out really big thanks to three of the most bet on teams losing. Actually, the three most bet on teams were pummeled this week.
#1: Bengals(Cincinnati) Point Spread
#2: Saints(NewOrleans) Point Spread
#3: Colts(Indianapolis) Point Spread
Interesting enough Natedogg shared that these were the most popular plays and recommended people bet against them a full 36 hours before any week 2 games had started. You can read his post in this 2+2 thread.

Again this was a text book week for the BSP.

The G911 article goes on to explain some other big wins for the sportsbooks were the 49ers, Texans, Panthers and the Jags. These games all had 65-70% of the public action on the losing side where the first 3 games mentioned had well over 75% on the losing side.

The bottom line is that it was a huge winning week for the sportsbooks this week and hopefully this can be a lesson to newer sports better.
